ABOUT

Luther League is the high school youth group for students in 9th to 12th grade.
The students meet periodically throughout the year – typically once a month. They complete mission projects, plan activities and outings, and spend time hearing devotions and sharing prayers.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Allison Days Parade, Saturday, June 1, 12:30 p.m., Butler County Fairgrounds in Allison. We are looking for people to join us! We will be passing out candy and Bible verse cards. Wear your Vilmar T-shirts! If you need one, we have a few select sizes left from last year. We will also be walking in the Greene River Days parade and the Bristow Days parade – more details will be available closer to those dates. If you have questions, please talk to Monica Edeker, 319-939-7348.

Ice Skating

The group attempted to ice skate at Young Arena on Sunday, April 14! Everyone was pretty wobbly, except Jason and Liz. Lots of hanging on to the wall so we wouldn’t fall down, but there were still a few spills. We all had a fun time and enjoyed fellowship with one another.

Easter Sunrise Service & Breakfast

The group was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 5:30 a.m., preparing the annual Easter Breakfast. They led the Sunrise Service at 7 a.m., and served the meal following. A huge thank you to everyone who helped with the service and breakfast. Also, thanks to everyone who donated to the group so that we can continue to hold meetings, work on mission projects, and grow in faith together with activities and outings.

The Luther Leaguers had a fun morning reading from the Bible, talking about life, sharing ways to live like Christ, learning to focus on “the good” (the many blessings we have from God). To emphasize our lesson, we wrote cards and decorated and filled gift bags for kids in the hospital. Then we played games and shot some hoops too.
*The baskets were delivered to Waverly Health Center on Sunday, April 14.

The Luther League girls passed out candles for the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service and helped pass the flame during the service.

The Luther League had a nice morning on Saturday. Dec. 9 with devotions, putting together gifts for the shut-ins, and playing a few games!

The Luther League girls had a busy afternoon on Wednesday, Nov. 22 baking and decorating cookies to serve during the fellowship time.

Feed My Starving Children Meal Packing Event

A fun morning serving in the name of our Lord. Vilmar Luther League (and friends!) packed meals at nearby Bethel Reformed Church’s Feed My Starving Children event. The morning session had 115 volunteers and packed 112 boxes in a short 1.5 hours - that’s 24,192 meals packed and ready to send to Ukraine and other areas in need around the world. Each meal costs $0.29; $106 feeds one child for an entire year.

Hockey, Supper, and Ice Cream

Luther League outing with this group on Saturday, March 11. Devotions in the car, Blackhawks hockey game, supper at Applebees, and ice cream from Four Queens.

Thanksgiving Eve Fellowship Hosts

The Luther League girls baked cookies and were the fellowship hosts following the Thanksgiving Eve service.

Meal Packing Event

Vilmar Luther League attended a meal packing event in Algona today. The meals kits were supplied by The Outreach Program out of Union, Iowa. A small portion of the meals will be distributed in the Des Moines area. The rest will be split between GoServ Global’s mission work in Haiti and The Outreach Program’s mission work in Tanzania. Around 53,000 meals were packed today.

Jesus Christ Superstar

The Luther League girls, mom, and myself enjoyed a Broadway rock opera/musical of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” at the Gallagher Bluedorn tonight. It was a very powerful, contemporary, modern performance of Jesus’ final days on earth before his crucifixion, as seen through the eyes of Judas. -Monica

Shoebox Gift Packing

October Luther League Mission Project: The girls spent the afternoon shopping for and filling one dozen shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child on Sunday, Oct. 16. The Bible lesson was based on Matthew 25:31-46. “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (v. 40) They also enjoyed ice cream, ping pong, and a bean bag toss game.

Wilder Park Camp Out

The Luther Leaguers enjoyed a camp out at Wilder Park lodge on Saturday, Aug. 13. The event included: devotions, kindness/faith rock painting, placing the rocks all around the park for people to collect/enjoy (pictured above), kayaking (pictured below), fishing, basketball, sand volleyball, tether ball, tennis, badminton, mini golf, s’mores, Bible trivia, Bible workbooks, movie time, and chapel on Sunday morning with the rest of the congregation.

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20

Thank You

A huge thank you to everyone who helped me with the Easter Sunrise Service and Breakfast: Keyan Ensign, Kimberley Edeker, Jason Edeker, Rhonda Edeker, Barb Wagner, Julie Eberline, Ron and Diane Salge, and Karly Nederhoff. Everyone’s help was much appreciated to make sure the morning went smoothly. Thank you to everyone who donated to the Luther League’s annual breakfast fundraiser, so that they can continue to hold meetings, work on mission projects, and grow in their faith together with activities and outings.

Luther Leaguers Game Day at the church on Saturday, March 5. Dartball, ping-pong, Yahtzee, Plinko, Pictionary, Uno, plus snacks, prizes, and lots of laughs. Also had a lesson on equality and forgiveness, and wrote cards for our church shut-ins.

Luther League bonding at Get Air Trampoline Park on Saturday, Jan. 22. We all survived! Emily and I taught the girls how to do a front flip (except none of us can actually land on our feet like you’re supposed to!). Everyone had a blast! Plus some devotions on the drive to the park and supper at Pizza Ranch too.

On Saturday, Dec. 18, Vilmar’s Luther League made fruit baskets for the Christmas Carolers to take to the shut-ins; put up the outdoor nativity scene at the church; and also put up a manger display at Allison’s Wilder Park Circle of Lights.

Our small, but mighty Luther League group bought, packed, and prayed for 6 Samaritan Purse shoeboxes. Yes, they’re only two young girls from Vilmar, but like we talked about, just think of the life changing message and good news of Jesus Christ that these 6 boxes will bring to children throughout the world. Lots of great faith-filled fellowship and conversations — just what we needed! And even some pizza, pop, and cookies too!

Luther League spent an afternoon with devotions, writing/coloring cards for members of the church, and then bowling.

Luther_Tree.jpg

Vilmar’s Luther League participated in “Wilder Christmas,” by decorated a tree for the event at Wilder Park in Allison. The devotion for the day was about keeping Christ not only at the center of their Christmas holiday, but also at the center of their lives. With that in mind, they put a nativity in the center of the tree, and got creative with ribbons, bows, lights, and tinsel. They also enjoyed hot chocolate with cookies, played at the playground, and attempted a game of tetherball.

Care Basket Delivery

Back in February, the Little Lutherans and Confirmation students made 10 tie blankets and put together care baskets to be given to children who end up at the emergency department of the Waverly Health Center. Due to COVID-19, delivery of the baskets was put on hold. Today, Sunday, Nov. 1, the Luther Leaguers were able to deliver the baskets–each one has a blanket, stuffed animal, religious coloring book, crayons, a Bible story book, and a get well card signed by the kids. The students learned how these baskets will provide comfort and bring smiles and the love of Jesus to the kids who end up in the emergency room in the future. And we had a quick stop for ice cream today, too!
